Safety @ YMCA: Does this seem right to you?
I went to the YMCA Freehold NJ tonight and a man ended up in the woman’s locker room by mistake. (He is special needs.) Anyway, this really got me to thinking – the woman’s locker room is downstairs in the basement totally in isolation. The doors are unlocked. There are no cameras. There is a front door entrance and a back door entrance with an elevator by the back door. The locker room is such that a female can be by herself at 9:00 o’clock at night. On my way out tonight, I mentioned to the front desk about my concerns. Do you know what they told me? They said it was the member’s responsibility to alert them if there are any problems downstairs. I asked them how I would do that if there is no phone and some guy prevents me from getting help? They said that you can get attacked anywhere. I beg to differ. At most gyms I have been at, they either have cameras, an electric card slide in, or the locker is in the main area. This is an incident waiting to happen. What do you think?
That sounds like you should find a different place to go. I don’t think I’d really think twice on it if it were the men’s locker room, however many more women are attacked then men, and more so if you think of a place where people work out there are some strong guys there. Not that women can’t take care of themselves but still you have a very good point.
Everyplace I’ve ever been at has the locker rooms right next to eachother with a desk infront with normally two people, and always at least one person so they can buzz people in to the correct locker room.
Go somewhere else because it sounds like even if there was a problem they wouldn’t do much for you anyway.
