Revised Sb1070 Arizona

Arizona Revised SB1070 law in layman terminology?

I am a mexican-american born to a mexican immigrant (my father) and my american born mother. I was just wondering if I should expect racial profiling or massive daily deportations on the news. Can someone explain to me the proof of citizenship when suspected as an illegal alien?

The question above is serious, but this one is rhetorical: Do signs of an illegal alien include their stereotypical style, color of skin, and language that they speak?

If you are here legally you have nothing to fear. Here are some things I hear a lot from the uninformed (aka, those who have not read the actual bill, but somebody’s personal interpretation. The following is my interpretation from reading the actual bill to the best of my knowledge, I do not guarantee accuracy but I do all in my power to only spread truthful information):

Racial profiling: “We will be stopped in the streets and harassed because we are Mexican”

Answer: The bill clearly states that law enforcement officers may question you after you have ALREADY BEEN STOPPED. If you are just walking down the street, it is no more legal for them to walk up to you and ask about your citizenship than it has been in the past. If you have been stopped for, say, speeding, then if and only if they have probable cause (one example of which is your heritage) then they may ask if you are a citizen. This is sort of like how the police can search your car without consent if they have probable cause to do so. How often do you hear about that happening? For me, occasionally but nowhere near routine. In reality, the only thing they could really ‘nail’ you for on a constant basis would be your race: Mexican. Yes, this is the so called “racial profiling.” So yes, it may very well happen. Consider this however, if, like in our aforementioned example, you were pulled over for speeding, then you will already have your driver’s license, which is considered proof of legal residency. Absolute worst case, you get an unfortunate and time consuming ride to the police station and they look you up, see you are hear legally, and release you.

Deportation: “People will be getting thrown out left and right”

Answer: I doubt it, with our already budget strapped states, most likely they will detain illegals for a while, then give them a greencard and force them to start paying taxes. Yes, some may be deported. If you think it’s wrong, consider this: illegals are already breaking the law. If somebody can come hear illegally and then complain when they are punished, then I don’t know what this world as come to. Don’t come in illegally and you won’t have a problem. Yes, I know, you almost certainly know illegal immigrants, and yes, if they are caught, they may very well be thrown out of the country. That’s the price they will pay for breaking the law. Now don’t get me wrong here, I’m not trying to beat on Mexicans in particular and I do not intend offense to you, your family, your friends, or any other person of Hispanic descent who reads this, but in my personal opinion, it is solely the truth that those who knowingly and willingly break the law in such a severe manner as illegal immigration should be forced to pay the price for there actions. If they didn’t knowingly break the law or if it were for some other smaller offense, I would say no big deal, but illegal immigration is a very big deal.
